Tips on developing a career strategy?

  1. Define and Visualize Your Long-term Career Goal: Start by clearly defining your long-term career goals.
  2. Identify and Develop Key Skills and Strengths: Reflect on the skills and strengths you naturally possess, which are crucial for your desired career path.
  3. Set Short-Term Objectives with Clear Action Steps: Break down your long-term career goal into manageable short-term objectives.

Here is an activity that will help you build a career strategy

Take a moment to consider these questions:

  • What’s the big picture? What is my long-term career goal? What do I know for sure?
  • Skills/Strengths: What are the natural abilities, skills and knowledge that I want to use?
  • Values: What is important in your work and life?
  • Areas for growth: What gaps in skills, experience, knowledge or networks do I need to obtain to achieve my ‘big picture’?

Think of a timeline for these plans:

What’s the big picture? What is my long-term career goal? What do I know for sure?

3 months: What would I like to see happen in 3 months? What steps can I take?

6 months-1 year: What would I like to see happen over the next year? What steps can I take?

2 year: What would I like to see happen over the 2 next year? What steps can I take?
