27 Talk to a company you do not know

Sometimes, talking to strangers can be a good thing. Talking to someone you don’t know at a company will help you find similar companies you may want to work for and build your network within the industry.

  1. Register for the Extern Job Shadowing Program or Explore It Job Shadowing Program (for select second-year Arts & Science students) to get access to listings of companies and employers who will allow students to come for a half-day to five-day job shadowing experience.
  2. For a different experience, keep an eye out for In the Field programs, which offer opportunities to go with a group of students to an organization and meet a variety of professionals in different occupations working within one environment.
  3. When you get to the workplace, seek the opinions of those on the inside on how they are trying to reinvent their industry.
  4. Interview people from your LinkedIn, the U of T Hub on Ten Thousand Coffees, the Mentorship Database or backpack to Briefcase.
